Hi.
I´m Elizabeth. I make my ceramic artwork in my small indoor/outdoor home studio outside of Seville, Spain. Raised in Toledo, Ohio, I have lived in different parts of Spain since 2002. I´ve been working with clay since I was a teenager, and I earned my BFA with a major in ceramics.
Artwork.
My ceramic work is an exploration of how forms relate to one another: how they connect, rely on each other, and coexist within space. Having moved frequently throughout my adult life, I’ve become especially attuned to the ways connections are formed, held, and sometimes let go. That sense of both attachment and impermanence shapes the work at its core.
Some connections in my work are strong and enduring - holding separately-thrown pieces together so firmly that pulling them apart would leave both forever changed. Others are more delicate, easily separated, repaired, or even forgotten. Yet these lighter connections still enrich the whole, adding layers of complexity and interest that wouldn’t exist without them.
As vital as connection is, each piece depends just as much on balance - both physical and visual. These sculptural forms often need support as they come together, gradually finding their own equilibrium until they can stand steady on their own.
The positive space created by each component gives shape to the negative space around it. Openings within and between forms allow the work to breathe, inviting a sense of openness and helping each piece settle naturally into its surroundings.
Together, these elements - connection, balance, and space - form a quiet dialogue within the work. Each piece becomes a reflection on interdependence and transience, where bonds can be both grounding and temporary, and where stability is something discovered, lost, and found again over time.
